Deer Resistant Gardening Plants and Tips

Are these magnificent yet pesky creatures wrecking havoc in your garden?

Good news there are dozens of beautiful, deer-resistant trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses you can plant to ward them off. Deer generally dislike plants with needles, spines, thorns, and fuzzy or pungently scented foliage. Be aware though there is no such thing as a truly deer-proof plant. Deer will eat  pine trees and rose bushes if the herd is large and food is scarce. You can still create a beautiful landscape with plants that are unlikely to tempt them.

List of 10 deer resistant plants that grow well in the pacific North West.

Bellflower

Plant Name: Campanula

Corydalis

Plant Name: Corydalis lutea

Bigroot Geranium

Plant Name: Geranium macrorrhizum

Foxglove

Plant Name: Digitalis selections

Epimedium

Plant Name: Epimedium selections

Jerusalem Sage

Plant Name: Phlomis russeliana

Ligularia

Plant Name: Ligularia selections

Lupine

Plant Name: Lupinus selections

Meadow Rue

Plant Name: Thalictrum selections

Mullein

Plant Name: Verbascum selections

Oregano

Plant Name: Origanum selections

Pigsqueak

Plant Name: Bergenia selections

Yellow Waxbells

Plant Name: Kirengeshoma palmata

Here are a few tips to make it tough for deer to browse your garden.

  • Put strong-smelling plants that deer don’t like on the outside of your garden and smaller plants that need more protection on inside.
  • Don’t leave rotted fruit, or leaves on your lawn; they are an open invitation to hungry deer.
  • Blinking Christmas-tree lights strung around the perimeter of your garden keep them on from dusk to dawn or a radio kept on during this time.
  • Drape fabric netting over plants and (most) deer will stay clear.
  • Scatter or hang bars of deodorant soap around the garden. Irish Spring is particularly unpopular with the deer.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of Tabasco sauce to a gallon of water and spray the foliage reapply after it rains.
  • Trim off lower branches of trees.

Winner of our Clark & Kensington Photo Contest

The winning photo was submitted to us by  Keith and Tracey.Tracey told us she was feeling brave and decided to paint her kitchen with black ACE paint she purchased in our Raymond store. It was a risk but we think it tuned out great!

We had to share the photo of this sweet room with you  submitted by Jessica Norton.Sara told us she  painted her daughter’s room earlier this month  and used Ace Premium paint in Raspberry Parfait and Pretty in Pink. We think it is a perfect room for a little princess and it looks like the cat approves too.
